Did you buy Gemini but not Blackwell?
« on: March 07, 2011, 01:07:29 PM »
With the fourth Blackwell game nearing completion, I'm intending on pushing the previous games in the series as hard as possible.  But before i do that, I wanted to get right to the source and pick your collective brains.  Specifically, the brains who decided to buy Gemini Rue but hesitated at purchasing any of the Blackwell games (or any of the other games on this site, for that matter).

So if that fits you, I'd love to hear from you.  Is Blackwell just not your thing?  Do you not want to spend the extra money?  Did you not even know they exist?  If, say, I offered all the Gemini customers a 50% discount on the Blackwell Bundle, would you take advantage of it?

I'd love to get your feedback!

-Dave

I would definitely buy the Blackwell Bundle if a special Gemini discount was offered.

I have just finished the Gemini Rue  demo and want to but the game. After looking around the  WadjetEye games site I was intrigued by the Blackwell games and will give them a punt, maybe after trying a demo but if they were offered as a discounted bundle I would just buy them straight away.

I only partially fit this category since I DID buy the Blackwell-bundle BUT I was a very difficult sale as:
a) I mostly just bought it as I'm researching adventure-games so wasn't really that I was interested in playing it. (it was only while playing the full version that I realized I enjoyed it)
b) Tho I played 1st demo as it came out I only bought the bundle years later.

Reason I was such a hard sell:
a) I was under the impression the entire series looked like Legacy, it was only at your blog-post on real-life NYC locations that I saw some night-time shots from Unbound and Convergence that I was like "hey that's much better than I remembered it!".

b) I did not like the Legacy demo as:
b-a) I hate exposition, I'm perhaps more sensitive than anyone on the rule show don't tell.
b-b) after the exposition when I was ready to play the demo was over without a single trace of meaningful interactivity, I felt a bit cheated having invested this time downloading the demo and reading up on that exposition and then not getting to do anything meaningfull, it felt like reading up on the rules of a sport and then being denied playing it.

c) a bit annoyed at the stretched out picture on my wide-screen monitor which also made the mouse move faster horizontally than vertically, it felt like there was some kind of forced mouse-acceleration on (tho it could be the widescreen stretching that gave that illusion), this doesn't affect my decision if I like where the story is going but it was a turn-off.

d) perhaps a bit bad luck on the reviews, I felt the adventuregamers review (which tend to be the only reviews I read) on unbound was unfairly harsh they immediately attacked the fact that you stated it was a lower-budget game (I wondered if they even would have complained had you not mentioned that, I certainly didn't notice the game was of lower ambition than the previous game, I thought the opposite),
GR on the other hand got a amazing review on adventuregamers (which I felt was a bit overpositive, not in final score but just that the text failed to really explain it's limitations, hmm come to think about it maybe I should change review-site as I never seem to agree with them :P)

as for GR I wasn't impressed gameplay-wise with the intro either BUT just the fact that every city BG was stylized made me think that if I buy the game and invest some time playing it then I'm sure I will learn to like it, I don't think you should ever have to LEARN to like something BUT video-games are still a long way from reaching that instant-immersion that some movies achieve so until then it needs at least  something to tell me "you'll probably learn to like this game if you give it time",

My answer is really short:

I bought Gemini Rue because its Science-Fiction and i love the scenario :)
(...and i've read in facebook about the game)

But i will try the Blackwell Legacy demo :) Give it a try.

I bought Gemini Rue, Puzzle Bots, and Emerald City Confidential but no blackwell.

For myself I find that sequels and series can get quite overwhelming. If the game isn't great it is a turn off for the future ones, and if you discover the series partway through you might want to play all of them and what not.

The graphics for myself are also a huge turnoff. Now I know I bought Gemini Rue and Puzzle Bots, so I'm warming up to these blocky graphics but they are what essentially kept me away from Blackwell.

The voice acting in your games is really good. And this is something that adventure games are notorious for dropping the ball on. So this is a huge plus and may interest me in the Blackwell series.

But for me personally I'm really just not a huge fan of sequels with a lot of story carryover. I'll probably get Blackwell sometime, I really like your work, but I'd really like to see Wadjet Eye developing different adventures with some better graphics but keeping the overally quality that is present in the games.

.... And not to be a total critic. I just wanted you to know my thought process. I hear Blackwell is good so I might look into it.

I bought Gemini Rue and not Blackwell.  This is mostly because I discovered Wadjet Eye Games when Gemini Rue came out.

I do have interest in buying the Blackwell games.  One thing I am waiting on is time and money obviously.  I am less interested in the Blackwell subject matter so despite wanting the games and liking their style they are on the back-burner more than Gemini Rue was, which due to its Blade Runner style was an ASAP play.  I have a stack of adventure games I need to play and have never even installed like Lost Horizon and Gray Matter... Gemini Rue jumped to the top due to its cyberpunk style.

Another thing I was waiting on was a possible future boxed release, since I am a box collector.  I emailed you asking about boxed copies and you said you might do something in the future.  A statement that this will never happen or that owners of the digital release would get a discount if it does would go a long way toward motivating me.

I probably would take advantage of some kind of discount, mostly to support you and also because it would be less of a "loss" should a boxed copy ever become available and I buy the games a second time.

I'd buy them if there was a physical release. Otherwise, I will not buy them.

I bought only Blackwell series and Gemini of all your titles. It was the retro graphic style of Gemini that had me interested.

But since all my Blackwell copies went with my different friends and never found their way home, I would get them on bundle as collection again (and never lend them away ever again). As long as the price is good.

So, I'm an avid reader of Rock, Paper, Shotgun. They linked to the trailer of Gemini Rue (the second one), I got excited and downloaded the demo. I was so impressed with the game, that I bought limited DVD edition. Before that, I was not even aware of Wadjet Eye Games existence.

I love sci-fi, Blade Runner especially. I actually grew up with the game version of Blade Runner, and Gemini Rue reminded me of those days.

I passed on the Blackwell series, for now. Though, I will probably try the demo at some point in the future. I am also addicted to discounts (promos at gog.com or steam), so if you would offer one, I would probably buy the whole Blackwell bundle on the spot :)
