Very little voiceove for Delta Six
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:18:54 PM »
When I play Odin, almost every line of his is spoken (like: "I am not that kind of person anymore" when I try to use gun on someone) - so he speaks not only during dialogues, but outside them too.

But I noticed that delta six never speaks when such lines appear, he only speaks during conversations with others - is that intentional?

The square boxes around the dialogue are generally thought bubbles in a way. But as far as why I'm not sure. The environment is different, the person is different, the the circumstances are different though.

Personally it never bothered me.

I'm not saying it bothers me, I just started to wonder if this is some kind of bug on my machine, perhaps I should hear this but I don't.

For example, when you examine items in your inventory, Azriel always reads the text - Delta Six, never. Same goes for examining objects in the world. It's odd.

I wondered about this too, at first!  But after playing the game (numerous!) times, I began to see the philosophy behind it.  Taking away his voice leaves him less in control, and definitely makes him feel less human.  And the descriptions themselves are brief, terse and perfunctory.  Azriel's descriptions, by contrast, often have lots of detail and show his feelings on what he's describing, no matter how mundane.

It was an artistic choice (even though it was a practical one) to not have Delta-Six's lines voiced.

The reason behind this is Delta-Six is supposed to be more of an introverted character -- he's looking inside himself, trying to figure out who he is and his past and all that. Furthermore, the very nature of his environment is one where he cannot be sure whom to trust, and so to verbalize (even though you can still think of it as thinking 'out loud') his thoughts via speech would detract from the paranoia of his environment.

Azriel's character is supposed to be more of the opposite: tough, gruff, and gritty, and so him speaking all his lines made more sense (plus you get that lovely noir-type narration that is so fitting for the genre).

Not to mention everything you say in Center 7 could be recorded, heard, or noted somehow and used against you later.

I never imagined that the characters actually speak aloud the "narration" (i.e. describe what they see) - for me it's like hearing their thought.

But that is just my impression, because I noticed that sometimes other characters comment such remarks, which means that they heard it.

Anyways, I am happy I am not experiencing any "missing speech" bug and I completely understand the rationale behind making Delta Six a more silent type.
