Speech only option
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:30:39 PM »
Hello,

I'm about to start playing this game, and I was wondering if there is any way to just have speech only.

I find the text coming up a bit distracting.  Not a big deal but any advice would be helpful.

Thanks.

Rob.

haha I heard that!
Thing is EITHER you read the text OR you listen to the VO, it's impossible to do both as you read so much faster than the VO, but here's the problem, since the portraits aren't animated the only thing that's updating on the static screen is the text so my eyes keep going toward the text, it's become so bad that I have a dedicated spot above my monitor that I conciously aim my eyes during conversations :P

one solution to my problem would ofc be text-only, but the text is giganourmously large, I had to go to my kitchen during on eo fht elong cutscenes but I didn't want to miss anything so I tried to look at the screen while making my sandwhich, to my suprise I found that since my kitchen is about 10m away from the living-room monitor that the text was only a little too big :P had my house been bigger so that I can stand 15m from the monitor I bet the font-size would be comfortable :P

Personally I quite like the way it's done in the game :)

The main reason for this is because some characters have portraits while others don't, and none of the characters have talking animations. When there was just a portrait on the screen and no text that was fine, but it was disconcerting to have a voice with no portrait and no talking animation.  There were other more technical issues as well.  So we kept the text in.

Thanks.  I can appreciate that because the game was originally written without speech, that without the text it would be difficult to know who was talking.

I've been playing it for a couple of hours now and I've got used to it (although I would always prefer the option of speech only).

Having said that, I'm absolutely loving the game and am completely engrossed in it. Excellent job.

Rob.

I do prefer no text on screen when using vocals... it baffles me that so many gamers put subtitles on.  That said it's not a huge deal ;)

I actually prefer to play with subtitles on, because English is not my native language. Text on screen helps me understand what's going on, and it gets me more accustomed to English at the same time.

I always turn the subtitles on if there's an option. Possibly just because it's what I've grown up with.

I like both voice and subtitles in adventure games, as they reinforce each other. The voice helps me to read faster and the subtitles help me to hear better. I need all the help I can get! But maybe being 87 years old has something to do with it, do you think?
Just putting in my 25 cents worth, inflation you know.
