Great game - but an unvoiced protagonist?
« on: August 26, 2018, 08:25:48 AM »
Hi there,

this is really a great game with a brilliant setting and story but there is one thing taking all the atmosphere for me:

The main character is the only one without a voice. I don't know if this happened due to financial reasons but this is just breaking the immersion for me. It takes a lot of emotions and just doesn't feal right. Much harder to empathize with him/her that way.  This really is a big missed chance...

I actually thought it was cleverly done because of *that moment* It makes it have more of an impact.

Generally prefer fully voiced too, but I can understand it would've been too much to record everything twice. And as said, it also works as a great tool to convey *that point*.
One thing I like about that though is that dialogue options HAVE TO include everything you say, so there's less ambiguity. Like, a short dialogue option that reads friendly to you, but as the character says their 5 lines you realise it wasn't meant as nicely.

Hi,

I totally agree with you, one of the main things I didn't like in the game was a missing voice of the lead actor,  probably was too expensive to record everything basically 6 times, if you have 2 options for male and female and if I remember correctly 3 choices of career or maybe even more then 3.

This lack of voice is really detaching me as main character from the the game, something is missing and it feels strange like the game isn't unified.

To be honest I'm very glad there are still companies like wadjeteye games that create amazing old school p'n'c adventures, and still live our philosophy of how games should look like.

I fully support this game, although it is not perfect, like some of the previous wadjeteye published games. For me Gemini rue and Technobabylon are top of the pops, hope we will see Technobabylon 2 as next title.

I don't have a preference when it comes to a silent or speaking protagonist, and I think both can work in different contexts, but I think that the reason that a silent protagonist often works in games is because it allows players to project their own ideas.

I actually discussed this a bit at the last AdventureX. There's a video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0Ugrf_5pkY&t=1588s

I talk about the unvoiced protagonist at around the 14 minute mark.

Have not played this game yet but in Technobabylon I noticed that when you look at a certain object the comments of the character are sometimes voiced, sometimes not.  Strikes me as a bit odd.
