(Blackwell and Unavowed Spoilers)
« on: August 15, 2018, 08:30:04 AM »
I'm curious, but still greatly happy about one thing.

KayKay is Kendra, or a reboot of her. If she's not a reboot, I'm still happy that she didn't move on. It seemed like she wasn't ready to.

And I have to say, the part of the game where you team up with her is one of the, hands down, most adorable in any blackwell series. It makes up for her tragic death in Epiphany, because she's become not only stable, but a normal kid again. Not sitting around playing piano because she has to and her parents marriage broke up.

You've written a touching story again, Dave. It's not on the level of Blackwell, but you were working on that for years, and a branching/choice driven game is much harder to give punch to on Game 1, if there is to be a sequel.

Don't get me wrong, it had punch, but not quite the tearjerking moments of Blackwell. This had more moments where characters showed off how awesome they were, and I genuinely enjoyed that, though. We had two or three in Blackwell (deception and epiphany, mostly), but it was a much more sombre game.

I'm on my second playthrough now, but I can't wait for your next project. I don't mind waiting years for it. :)

Madeline once said to Joey, why he become a spirit guide - "You were merely the last.. - The last what? - The last spirit we saved..." -so, since Kendra was the last one Joey and Rosa saved (old fashioned way, not by the Vortex :D ) it is literally her, not just a reboot :D It's literally same universe, where you can see Palmer, Durkin, a hint to Joey's future in the subway... :D

I personally think this was a great way to give an explanation & reveal what happened to some of the characters from the Blackwell games. I noticed a few other characters that may been related to other wadjeteyegames characters such as Marleen Demarco, maybe she was related to Joe Demarco from the Shivah? The Grant City Trust was both referenced in Blackwell Deception & the Unavowed, Was Ryan Grant related to Jason Grant?   8)

Another thing about Blackwell ties: early on, it is revealed that Kalash knew about an active Bestower in New York in the recent past, but declined to make contact. Obviously, this is supposed to be a reference to either Rosa or, less likely, Michael Cooper from Epiphany. Thing is, we know that Bestowing passes through bloodlines. The first one we know of in Rosa's line was the uncle of Jocelyn Contis, then Jocelyn, Patricia (apparently one of her parents was supposed to be Jocelyn's cousin), then Lauren and finally Rosa. Michael Cooper states that two of his older siblings were Bestowers with Madeleine as a Spirit Guide before him and that it quickly drove them to their deaths.

Now, the reason to mention this is the question of how Jonah got to be a Bestower. Logan doesn't mention any other relatives that acted strange before Jonah did, so this raises the question: are they part of Rosa's line somehow (their spirit guide is the last regular spirit that Rosa and Joey sent on), or Michael's, or a third line? And why were the Unavowed aware of only one Bestower?

An unrelated odd thing is how everybody is New York and immediate surroundings falling unconscious at once at the end of Epiphany seemingly had no noticeable impact on society. Nobody even mentions it happening, and while there is a 9/11 memorial  on Staten Island, nobody put up a memorial to those killed when the vehicles they were travelling in crashed or they tumbled down the staircase they were walking on.

Loved Sam Durkin's cameo (seriously, that guy needs his own game!)

I found a few, some more subtle than others. I thought Jordan seemed familiar then I realized he is the young clerk from the wired abacus. Tony Meltzers office (wish I have yet to gain access to) , most likely a relation to Paul and Charlie, though i can only send KayKay in and its too dark to see anything.

Was a little gutted when i found nothing about Joey, would have been nice to see how he was doing :) (unless i've missed something!)

More oddities:
- The antagonist seduced Art Eddings, regardless of which sex you chose. Art being married to a woman suggests that he is heterosexual, so it comes a bit out of left field that a male could easily seduce him. Was it the original plan to have the male seduce Jess instead?

- If you tell the General to take Harrison with him, she shoots herself in the head, only the screen fades to black, we hear a gunshot and splash, and when it fades in again she is gone from the boat. The game didn't shy away from showing gore and violence in other scenes, so what was the reason for the censorship? Simply too difficult to animate properly?

- The player character looks the exact same regardless of origin.  He or she doesn't even modify their outfit over the course of an entire year. Presumably this was done to save effort on sprites, but it still seems strange.

Agree, there is some things in the game that must be fixed.I mean there is kind of illogical things in it.(NO OFFENSE)

Did another playthrough where I killed as many opponents as possible. Turned out that only the Fae (hit by fireball from Eli and dissolves) and the Dragon (turns a golden colour and dissolves) get on-screen deaths, everyone else has a fade-to-black or dies offscreen (Jordon). Again, the inconsistency seems strange.

Edit: I used Eli for all the missions, presumably Mandana will use her sword if Eli isn't present. I guess they wanted to save on animations again (fade-to-black means not having to show them burned by Eli's fireball or cut up by Mandana's sword), but it still doesn't explain Harrison's suicide.

Another little thing: in the bartender prologue, the villain kills Jonah, then Sammy and presumably walks out of the bar. Wouldn't Logan be the most likely third victim, seeing as he was standing outside hoping for Jonah to come out and probably wouldn't have time to get out of range even if he ran away the moment he heard gunshots.

KayKay only appeared to Logan sometime after Jonah died, it would not have been instantaneous. In Blackwell, Joey only appeared to Rosa after she had tossed her aunt's ashes in the river, so at least a few days passed between Lauren's death and Joey appearing before Rosa.
