Steam achievements not working

When I started the game, I picked up several achievements. However, now they don't seem to work any more. Has there been an update which could have broken them?

I'm also open to any other suggestions! I've certainly had the in-game achievement notice appear several times, for example for finishing the game, without it registering in Steam.

Note - playing on Windows 8; system unchanged between May & June.

--SOLUTION--

I messed around with the settings in an attempt to fix this. In the process, I switched from DirectDraw and 4x nearest neighbour to Direct3D and anti-aliasing... then back again, because Direct3D was causing crashes.

Now achievements work. I've no idea why, but I've kept this up in case it helps other people.

This was an issue about two years ago, when there was a Steam client update which stopped the achievements from working. That was fixed and the problems went away. We haven't received any complaints since, but that doesn't mean that there still aren't problems!

AGS games and Steamworks have compatibility issues, and the achievements not getting activated is an issue that plagues every AGS game from time to time, with seemingly no rhyme or reason. I know this is a really lame response. The AGS/Steam thing has been a thorn in our side since we first got on Steam! We're hoping the issues with the engine will be fixed sometime.

Does this happen with ALL the achievements or just some of them?

When it happened, it applied to all achievements.

I started playing, and unlocked everything I expected with no issues. Then all of a sudden - the very next day - none of them worked at all.

Finally, after I messed around with my settings (as described above), they all worked fine again - which means I don't have a problem any more.

I'm thoroughly confused, but there's no harm done! I do understand that you don't have full control of the engine. On the other hand, you were responsible for the game, and that was very fun.
