Gemini Rue (3D Mod)
« on: September 28, 2013, 05:49:50 PM »
Hello Wadjet Eye, hello Everyone!
Last summer I found a couple of days and started to use one popular and free game engine. For a test level I remade a small part of Gemini Rue game in 3D. I don't continue to make this project anymore, but I learned everything I wanted during this research project and now I am making my own steps in videogame developing.

Gemini Rue has really interesting art design and storytelling. I want to say thank to everyone who worked on this game.  It inspired me a lot.

Um. Holy crap.  :o

This is AMAZING! What did you use to create this?

-Dave

edit: aha. I see from the youtube description that you used Unity. I need to pick that up one of these days!

edit2: I dutifully tweeted this. I also let the developer know about it. This is seriously incredible stuff.

Thank you Dave. You are so kind to me.  ;D

The world of Gemini Rue is amazing. I was always trying to imagine how it would look in real life during my walkthrough. That's why I ended making this small project. It is not so perfect as I wanted it to do. At first I wanted to do third person game, but I didn't manage my time to comlete my character model and animation. That's why those components are a bit glitchy.

Unity is a good and cheap way to produce a small indie project. I found out that its a easy game engine that gives you enough possibilities to accomplish all kind of goal.

Hah. Everyone says unity is "easy" but every time I pick it up and go through a tutorial I can never figure it out. Most of the guidebooks seem to assume you have a basic level knowledge about 3D and programming that I just don't have. Or maybe I'm just old and resistant to new things!  ;D ;D

I meant Unity is easier than other game engines but yeah, it's still not easy to understand how it works. But anyway there's a lot of tutorials and a lot of info in internet so just give you one more chance and maybe you'll get it. Wish you luck !  :)

I will try to public also a PC version at the weekend, but first I would like to get rid of the bugs.

Wait, so is this actually a 3D version of the entire game, or just of certain rooms or sequences? (N00b question--sorry!)

Just a small scene. It took three years just to make the 2D game. Making the whole thing in 3D would take... a lot longer!

Actually, Dave, I'm not sure about that. It can be more expensive to make a game in 2D than 3D. Simply because if you need a custom Animation, you have to draw every frame and with 3D, you can just move the bones.

Perhaps, but building environments is a much more difficult thing to do. For 2D, you just draw a small section of street from one angle. For a 3D game, you have to design, model and texture the entire street from every angle! So... I imagine a fully 3D Gemini Rue won't happen anytime soon. But if it does, I'd love to see it!

I tried both 2D and 3D and the second one I think is more complicated. The level of details and composition is tottaly different in 2D and 3D world. You should model, texture (UVW,Bump,Lightmap, Shaders) the hole environment.

And even animation should be more detailed in 3D game than in 2D.

There's a reason why approaching a 3D engine like Unity scares me. :D

But that's so interesting. You have a goal and you try to accomplish it.
