Gog.com Version
« on: November 20, 2012, 06:28:23 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know if the gog.com version of GR is the same as the Steam build (i.e. with the fix for the rain effect)?

I ask because I cannot run the version of the game I got from here on my laptop (freezes on first screen), but the Steam version works fine and I would like to get the gog.com version if it will work for me.

Thanks,

DF

Hi DF. Just to be sure - are you playing the demo version or the full paid-for version?

Hi Dave,

It's the full version. Yes I have already bought it twice, but got it on sale both times, so I don't feel too bad!

You bought it twice and it STILL doesn't work? Have you tried opening up the winsetup.exe file and changing the graphics mode from Direct3D to DirectDraw (or vice versa?) That usually fixes the problem, depending if your computer can handle DirectDraw.

Lol, no the Steam version is fine.  I tried all the options on the other version, but to no avail.  I can hear the rain, but the screen freezes.

I seem to remember reading a post here where people were having the same problem as me and you ended up replacing the AGS plugin used for the rain effect.  I assume that this is the version used on Steam, because that version works fine.  In fact, I seem to recall now that I also got a third copy in a bundle somewhere that also didn't work.

Anyway, I do have a working copy (Steam) and I was just considering picking up a DRM free one from gog.com while they have a sale on, if it is the version that works.

Out of curiosity, when did you buy the game from this website? It was eventually fixed, but maybe not before you bought it. It was fixed around December of last year.

The GOG version is the same as the Steam version, minus the achievements!

Looks like I originally bought in July '11.

Thanks for the info - I'll probably pick it up from gog then.  I like to get DRM-free versions of everything I can from there.

Thanks again for your help.

Ah, then you'd definitely have the freeze-on-startup version! If you'd like the new version, email me and I'll give you a code to redownload from the WEG website.
