On top of the crane Ray can use his mobile phone during the conversation with Ed, and doing this escapes the conversation. Then you can control Ray and Bennet to walk around, and initiate the ordinary conversation with Ed where you can ask him for hints (he has no suggestions), ask him to follow you around (which he does) and give him items (including the live resonance device!)
