Tombstones puzzle - stuck

I'm stuck at the tombstones puzzle at the vault. I figure I should perhaps use the key as an overlay for the tombstones engravings but all I get from doing that is scrambled letters that doesn't seem to make any sense at all. Some letters do not really fit in the circles and it's hard to figure in what order they should be read. Am I on the right track at all? Any hints for moving on are appreciated.

The Long Term Memories might help you figure it out. Also, who is your father, and who is your uncle?

Read left to right, like you would in a book.
Concentrate only on the circled letters.
(spoilers)
1) Count how many letters you need.
2) Think of Anna's memories.
3) You might not understand it at first, but was her family American?
