Rewiring the Lab Door (Major spoilers)
« on: June 28, 2012, 02:38:56 PM »
I have no clue what code to put in, even, to start the rewiring. I would like to finish this part for the points. Any nudges or spoilers written in white would be highly appreciated, thank you.

I'd like to try to do it myself with a nudge, but if it's way hard, then forget it and I'll just let people tell me how, LOL.

Below is the complete solution for the wire puzzle. Read the first hint, try it. If you're still stuck, read the second hint, etc.

HINT 1
Don't input code, the panel's fried! You have the means to open the panel.
----------------
HINT 2
Connect the pins randomly and flip the switch several times. Notice a trend?
----------------
HINT 3
The more pins are connected, the fewer diodes light up.
----------------
HINT 4
Suppose that the pins drain a certain amount of "energy" from the wire.
----------------
HINT 5
Try variations on a particular combination to determine how much each pin drains.
----------------
HINT 6
Try to find a combination of pins that, when connected by the wire, drain the requisite amount of energy.
----------------
HINT 7
Realize that Vince is evil and the etched lines are there only to confuse you. Thank him for teaching you a valuable life lesson.
----------------
HINT 8
Connect the pins that drain the required amount of energy, disregarding the lines.
----------------
Flip the switch to check your solution and go through the door. Profit.

I just posted a hint-by-hint solution in this thread, too. It's actually really cool how you can figure it out - and I am so not a maths person either, but you can tell Vince is.

Thanks to you both, I'm at that part now (just got the ladder) trying to get more points, so I'll sneak a peek a few words at a time and see if I can catch on. :)

Yes, Vince is definitely a maths person, you can sure tell by this game. Awesome, brain-wracking puzzles.

OMGosh, I was back and forth in the game and ended up on Tropxe's post and it so confused me, and yes, Vince is so evil, so much so that I resorted to cheating to get my achievement and points, LOL.

Thank you both so very much for trying to help me, even though the best I could do was open the panel and learn now to get and use the wires. I got the pegs to light up, so I thought I was doing good, lol. Thanks :)

Yeah, re-reading what I wrote, I didn't really give any context for it. What I should have said is "Each pin the wire touches on its way from the top to the bottom will either add or subtract a number (from the starting point of zero) and you have to get it so it adds up to 10". What you're basically doing is plugging together a sum, like "number Lego", and you want it to equal 10. So like, one pin may be +15, another -2 and another -3; obviously the player has no idea what is what, and has to figure it out. If you do put the wire along those pins, you'd get the result of 10, and the door would open. Hopefully, although it's too late, that makes my wall of text slightly less nonsensical to you.

Either way, at least you got that damn door open in the end. ;)

Lol, thank you, Tropxe, that made quite a bit more sense, but still don't know if I could have gotten it on my own! :) I would have ignored it completely if I weren't trying for points (more than achievements). I love great communities. Thanks!

^^ there's a neat easter egg you unlock when you collect all the regular achievements (everything except for full points), so I suggest you do those as well :P

We don't have to do the hardest ones like not locking Anna's door? I think I forgot to turn on commentary when I had to restart for my missing Juno Lab point. I'll just replay, lol.

You have to do ALL the achievements to get the easter egg (except the 340 one), even the trickier ones like not locking the door, and solving the puzzle box without visual aids.

I've got some tips for doing the monster scene without locking the door. First of all, the code is always the same, 591, you don't need to use the bear. When turning the dials, you can put the cursor at the top or bottom of them to turn them up or down - that means, you turn the first one either direction till you get 5, turn the second one down to get 9 and turn the third one up to get 1 (you'll see what I mean when you do it).

Take the jar of coins, go under the bed, look at (right-click) the air vent. This makes it so interacting with the jar (left-click in the inventory) will make Anna take a coin out. Drag the coin from your inventory to the vent and you've done it! And of course, skip through the text as fast as you can.

You don't have to right click the vent, Anna will take out a coin regardless. But yeah, that's the way to do it, with as little steps as possible.

You do, she doesn't know why she'd want to take out a coin until you check the vent. I just checked it again to verify. Maybe if you drag the coin jar to the vent, that works too, though I think I might have tried that and it didn't. Not 100% sure.

Oh, hang on, I think you have to watch the other flashback if you want to do it without interacting without the vent first. So yeah, I guess right clicking the vent is a faster, better way.

Darn, I'm just not fast enough. Plus I have to use a laptop. :) Maybe I can get my husband to try it for me. Timed, fast things are hard for me.

Read the other posts. I totally did not know about holding your cursor at the top/bottom of the keypad, thanks! And I thought you had to watch the video because she wouldn't open the dang jar. I was clicking on the vent, also. With these tips I might be able to do it myself, yay. Thanks!
