Gamestory Question (Total Spoilers!!!)
« on: June 27, 2012, 06:24:25 PM »
I'm replaying and something occurs to me and is confusing. Total game spoiler Alert!

I'm on the subway with Ed and the blackout occurs. Remember in Ed's phone is the number for 14A? (I believe it's A, not B) but anyways... Now remember when Ray and Bennet went to Ed's apartment at the end of the game and got the resonance device from the tripod and Ray was able to call it from his phone, and to call the other resonance device that they found at the warehouse. They were 14A and 14B. Weren't they the ones that destroyed Juno Labs and caused the blackout?

Who set up the device on the tripod in Ed's apartment and set them both off when Ed was on the subway (without his phone in his inventory)? And 14A was in Ed's phone...it wasn't Ed who blew up Juno Labs and killed Dr. Morales. I'm confused, did I miss something?

Ed set it up prior to leaving the flat. And did you notice the specifics of 14A/B upon observation?
Not sure which playthrough this is for you, but I'd definitely recommend to reserve one for "commented mode". I think you gonna like it. It adresses plenty of questions and background info like this.

Thank you! This is just my second playthrough and I didn't run the commentary the first time because of spoilers, but I'm running it now. I'll keep an ear out, and I'm sure to discover things the second time around that I missed in the first.
Thanks a bunch!

It was Ed. Most likely, Resonance device with phone 14B (the one in the warehouse) had already been planted before hand, seeing as Ed had specifically borrowed the tripod from his neighbor to get the correct alignment to strike the lab. When the screen goes black after the first scene, he sets up the tripod and hooks the Resonance device to it (with phone 14A connected to it).

If you look at the text message logs from those phones, the Cellfish phone (the one Ed actually uses) sends a text message to device 14A, which then forwards the message to device 14B. Both devices work on a timer, just like the ones in the end, which is why Ed doesn't need his cellphone anymore to activate them on board the subway.

He then proceeds to board the same subway as Anna in order to ensure the two of them meet before the tragedy.

Just some extra clarification on this! :P

Yep, except 14A is Warehouse and 14B is Ed's apartment, but that's rather nit-picking... :P

I was literally coming here to correct that, lol. It wouldn't even make sense for it to be other way around, since if 14A was indeed in his room, when you'd call it, it would ring. So yeah, the warehouse device had to have been planted before hand... which makes perfect sense, considering Ed's remark when you try to call it, with him doubting anyone's found it, but still making sure that is indeed the case by calling it back.

By the way, I noticed you in the credits, Tramponline. The mighty beta tester! :)

I'm just going through the game again with the commentary on, too. When I noticed the 14A number in his phone I thought to myself "Mm-mmm, that's good foreshadowing". I noticed Ed hang his head after talking to Morales on the phone the first time through, I thought it was interesting but then soon forgot about it. Seeing it now, it all makes sense and is a really subtle yet very poignant thing that they put in there. And the tragic irony of Anna dropping the coin. It's her lucky coin and she thinks of it as something that always helps her, yet if she hadn't dropped it at that moment, Ed couldn't have ingratiated himself with her and she wouldn't have ended up like she did. Oh, and Ed leaving the subway in what I think is the graveyard where Anna's family are buried.

Though one thing I don't really get that I only saw this playthrough; if you make Bennet enter the post office, he gets shot. But why? Why would Amul shoot him? It maybe makes sense on the first playthrough since this is "criminals" doing "bad things", so they might shoot a nosey cop. But when you know what they're doing, and how they actually want Bennet and co. to work together (and when Reno should be able to predict this kind of stuff) it makes no sense at all that they'd kill Bennet.

That had to have been an on-time subway, lol. The timing had to have been quite specific, but I can see how it worked now, thanks.

Wow, I didn't think of that about Bennet. And why would Amul have a gun? He possibly thought people were after him/them, and it was "shoot first, ask questions later".

Considering the Eleven foundation were responsible for creating such a vast archive of data and organizing a global terrorist attack it was strange to find them operating on the streets like petty criminals.

It can be assumed that they were only present at the stake out to somehow help enable Bennet to meet Ed. Although if this were the case shooting him would be completely counter intuitive and put their entire plan in jeopardy.

The scene, of course, rewinds and forces the player to choose the other option. Maybe it was just put in for dramatic affect. I don't know if anything has been said about it. It sure got my attention, though, lol.

I don't think even Reno planned so far ahead to have Bennet and Ray be the guys to stop Ed. The way I see it, they saw an opportunity to use them after Ed met with them. Before the whole incident, Bennet was just a cop sticking his head into their business, and thus needed to be disposed of.

The whole trick Ed had up in his sleeve to taking them down was to be unpredictable, to do something completely unnatural to him (which even him acknowledges). Amul and Reno just didn't see it coming.
