Decoding the journal?
« on: June 20, 2012, 02:48:09 PM »
I'm not quite sure how to decode Doctor Morales journal.
I have the cypher LTM, but the displayed graphic and dialogue doesn't seem to indicate much.

it's not that "hard" (compared to other puzzles) decoding that stuff, it took me around 1-2 minutes to decypher the 38 pages :D

Compare the coding and the way the letters are showing, you will find the pattern.

Do you know an expert on puzzles whom you can maybe ask for a hint? (In-game, I mean.)

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
It's obviously a substitution letter code, but I am frustrated by the LTM graphic for the cypher.

Problem is, the graphic kinda obscures some of the letters. So far, I've got a grid consisting of three rows of three.

Top row: ABC
Middle row: IJK
Bottom row: STU

The S was obscured, but I figured that must be it, since the other rows have similiar groupings of letters e.g A before B before C, I before J before K.

It's the other part of the cypher that's more frustrating. I can see an L and possibly what might be V? Broken apart by a right-facing arrow. I have no idea what the upper right hand corner letter must be, nor the letter that presumably opposes L, assuming there's supposed to be an opposing arrow that forms a cross that I'm just not being allowed to see properly.

EDIT:
AH! Of course! It must be D in the upper right corner. And I guess M must oppose L? Assuming there's supposed to be a cross.

Urgh, it is so annoying only being able to view the cypher for a few seconds whilst Javier and Anna talk.

It's a logical assumption that the first two words of the letter are

Dear Anna

Once you plug in that, it's pretty easy to decipher the rest.

See, I suspected as much, but then I considered that I was decoding a journal, which is more like a diary, rather than a letter. Anywho! I've been sketching some solutions on paper, and I think I'm on a roll. Thanks everyone!

When you look at the journal in-game, you can actually type the letters right onto the screen.

I was actually able to solve the cypher without even looking at the LTM. You don't need to use that grid, although I suppose I might be useful somehow. (I found the shapes hard to make out in their pixelated form.) If you can recognise the pattern of words, you can quickly decipher the journal, including those you don't normally encounter.

And as pointed out, you can simply click on the symbol, type in the letter, and it will automatically be substituted into every instance. I don't think you get credit for it unless you do that, in fact.

Oh, don't worry. I knew all about entering the code into the in-game journal. I was talking about drawing out the fully extrapolated cypher grid.

Actually managed to figure it out very soon after my second post. Thanks anyway!

I took that line :)

Good that Journal was not originally written in Spanish.
