[Tech] Crash on reloading your steam game?
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:00:34 AM »
This was caused by the recent update.  As might know from the other "tech" thread on this forum, there was a big compatibility issue with Win 7 laptops.  We finally fixed it, but the downside of the fix is that it causes your savegame files to be incompatible.  This is an issue with the AGS engine (the engine we used to make the game) and a bit beyond our control.  If you are playing the game on Steam, you have a problem.  The automatic update system they have doesn't allow us to selectively choose who gets the update, so EVERYONE got the update, and so everyone will encounter this problem.  So... we're sorry about that.  It was a "damned if we did, damned if we didn't" sort of situation.

The best solution is to distribute compatible savegames that work with the current version of the game that is now on Steam.

You can nab them here.

Just unzip them where-ever your savegame files are stored. By default it is either:

c:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\gemini rue\Saves

or

c:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\gemini rue\relists\Saves

This should hopefully cover everybody.  Sorry again for this problem!

Hi Dave, thanks for letting us know the reason and that it is beyond your control.

I just sent you an email for the request (had to dig up your email via your blog) :)

anyways thanks again and GR is a great game! I hope there's a sequel (I have not finished the game yet, so no spoilers please)

Grah.  It's looking like savegames are handled differently on different computers.  I'm thinking the best way to handle this is to play the game and generate a bunch of savefiles that I can distribute.

Fix one problem and cause another.  So sorry about this, everyone.  At least this time I can blame the engine. :)

Dave no problem. it might only be me andgaiasgrace having this issue so don't fret. if it's really beyond your control, then may i suggest you make an announcement in both this forum & the Steam forum that this issue cannot be resolved, at least other folks will know not to download the update (if it is possible to avoid it).

one other thing, could we fool the game by changing some hex value in the executable? yeah trying to apply some old skool solutions.... not sure if Steam will flag it as a hax. :P

You're definitely not alone.  :)  I've received about a dozen emails from folks with this issue.  In any case, I have created compatible save files!

You can nab them here: http://www.davelgil.com/boe/grue/grue_saves.zip

Just unzip them where-ever your savegame files are stored. By default it is either:

c:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\gemini rue\Saves

or

c:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\gemini rue\relists\Saves

This should hopefully cover everybody.  Sorry again for this problem!

The game also crash on mac version. I just got the game from HumbleBundel and has the same problems. What is strange is that "autosaved" games will load perfectly. Funny.

According with this http://www.wadjeteyegames.com/forum/index.php?topic=1889.0. PC saved version won't load on mac version.

Is there any chance that a saved files for mac are also released?.

Happy new year to everyone

I am wondering if Humble upgraded the game and uploaded it to Steam without telling me. Are you able to save and reload save files now? Or is it just older saves that no longer work? And could you give the error message that appears when the crash occurs?

No clue. I do not have the steam version since I missed that extra dollar that was needed to get the steam key. But I did made another test and for my surprise it did work (check my last replay in the other thread).

Haven't play the game before. All game files are new. The game crash with out leaving me a note. But I can get this message from the system log:

Quote
1/1/14 6:20:11.147 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser: ([0x0-0x59059].com.wadjeteyegames.GeminiRue[569]) Exited with code: 91

Hope it helps. But I thinks that this is beyond the game files.
I keep you updates if it happens frequently.

Thank you.

Ah. In that case, Your best bet is to contact the humble bundle guys directly. They are the ones who made the port, and they are better equipped to help you than we are. You can contact them at support@humblebundle.com.
