The Blackwell series / Blackwell Epiphany demo
« on: April 09, 2014, 04:12:47 AM »
Well, I've just played the demo, and it was spectacular! I loved the "snow storm" transitions. And Joey!  :o

Primordia / Re: Just finished the demo

I wasn't altogether sure whether I wanted to buy Primordia, so I decided to play the demo so I could make an informed decision. Now I know my life will not be complete until I have played this game.

The Blackwell series / Re: What happened to Lauren Blackwell?
« on: October 10, 2012, 12:43:54 PM »

As far as I've understood mediums need to be bonded with their spirit guides, and they need to free ghosts on a regular and frequent basis. If they do not do so, then - according to Madeline in "The Blackwell Convergence" - the portal to the afterlife essentially floods their head with the universe, and the human mind can't take that. That causes the insanity.

In the Countess's case, she had somehow broken her bond with Madeline, which drove her mad. Lauren stopped saving ghosts altogether in order to take care of her niece, when Rosa's parents died in a traffic accident. As a result, she went mad.

As for why Joey couldn't leave Lauren, I imagine it was the same reason as when she was sane. A spirit guide can only move about 30 feet away from his host. As long as Lauren wasn't dead, he was stuck within that radius.

Dave actually wrote about this on his blog when "The Blackwell Deception" was published: http://nygamedev.blogspot.no/2011/11/graphics-and-budget.html

Oh and just for the record, Deception rocks. :)

The Blackwell series / Re: End of the Blackwell line?

It's been discussed earlier, but if Joey is to continue being a spirit guide, he may have to learn italian in a hurry. I think Rosa's mother was Italian, I'm pretty sure Jack says so in one of his letters to Lauren, which we see in BL. In that case Rosa's only living relatives are - presumably - in Italy. Rosa doesn't seem to have any contact with them, or even know who they are. Joey might end up attached to one of them, even if they are not actually Blackwells.
That might not make much of a difference actually, as Patricia Blackwell was a medium, and she would have to have gotten her surname through marriage. In that case it seems like being in the family in general is more important than actually being born with the Blackwell name.

Let's see... There's bound to be some mistakes here but let's give it a go.

Blackwell Legacy:
The Brooklyn Bridge
Rosa's Apartment Block (unknown)
Washington Square Park w/dog run and fountain
New York University
Nodespace (You might have some trouble getting there).

I'll edit this a little later and add more locations.

Actually, according to the commentary in Blackwell Legacy, Dave had a similar idea when he was working on plot ideas in the series. He toyed with the idea of freeing each ghost in a metaphorical way, but decided it got too complicated.

Personally I like the idea of node space as something otherworldly and impersonal. It was ties to the mortal world which held the ghost back from the afterlife, even if those ties weren't nice. For me node space underscores the fact that the ghosts fully realize that they have no more place in the physical world and have to move on.

Jubilation! Got my game yesterday! Now to clear my schedule for some serious playing...

The Blackwell series / Re: Blackwell Deception Help (Possible spoilers?)
« on: October 15, 2011, 03:16:14 PM »
Oh wow! I just finished, and I enjoyed it very much. Joey and Rosa were more Joey and Rosa than ever, we get to ponder upon whether ghosts can get it on and we know that the road ahead is going to get much more challanging for our intrepid pair.
Like others, I liked that the game had a proper conclusion, and yet smoothly intimated that there will be more to come. I realize that's a well-known fact for anyone who's read this forum, seen Daves tweets or read his blog, but for a newcomer to the series it's a good way to establish the potential.
Oh and the twist after the credits? Did not see that coming!

There will be about 6 games according to this interview on Adventure Gamers: http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,1364/p,2

Arrrrgh! You evil, evil man! I've just played the demo, so now I've had no choice but to pre-order the DVD for all the goodies, even though I already own all the previous Blackwell games. I hope you're happy!

I came across these voice clips on the AGS forums: http://www.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php?topic=42300.80
We've heard the first two (Dave posted them on this thread), but I don't think the third has been posted anywhere. Despite your apparent dislike for your original "Bestowers of Eternity" game, you just can't let it go, can you Dave? ;) That said, "Bestowers of Eternity" is a rockin' title. If I had the choice between being a medium or a BoE, I'd pick being a Bestower anytime.

Well, I'll shamelessly copy and paste from the AGS forum. If posting these kind of things is discouraged, feel free to slap me upside the head:

"Bit of an update.  The game is fully programmed, all the backgrounds and portraits are in.  99% of the animations are done, and most of the music has been composed.  Beta testers are in the midst of playing and replaying the game ad-naseum to find all the bugs, and I am dedicating this entire month to fixing them and adding voice acting.  All of Joey and Rosa are recorded and imported.  The rest of the cast is coming in to record over the next two weeks.

We'll be officially announcing the game, along with a release date and a trailer, on September 14th.
Last Edit: Today at 17:47 by Dave Gilbert "

In other words a lovely surprise will be waiting for me when I get home from my holidays!  ;D

And we appear to have - at least sort of - the release date! According to Dave's twitter account we're looking at early October: http://twitter.com/#!/WadjetEyeGames

Here's hoping!

Wahey! Not only was a bone thrown, it still had meat on it! ;D I really loved the first clip, the voice actors convey so much of the easy familiarity between Rosa and Joey. Thank you!
