Shardlight / Re: Loved Shardlight - What's next?
« on: March 18, 2016, 04:34:31 PM »
I downloaded Shardlight on 3-8 and finished it on 3-11.  What a wonderful, enjoyable

You meant 8 of the 3rd and 11 of the 3rd .

Why do Americans use such a bad and confusing date format ?
Who made you a mod?

And these forums are run by Americans, on an American-hosted server.

Also I felt that the game relied too much on a gay stereotype, which became tedious after awhile.

Well no, there is never even a point where they mention he's gay.

Don't think of him as that, think of him as the highly annoying sales rep. That's really what the character was.
Considering that he is a synthetic, whether or not his platform emulates sexuality is unknown. But the character is more a reference to actor Kenneth Williams (who was, by the way, gay).

Bump! If anyone's still interested, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67740160/BlackwellConsequence_Day0.7z - now includes a version that'll run under Windows without needing to download any extra software. There's also a little bit added/changed.

Hmmm. I'm getting the idea I'm going about this the wrong way somehow. The game isn't very accessible, is it. Shall have to see about finding an easier way to get this playable. Apologies.

I can't get it open either! :(
Which one, the 7Zip file or the T3 file? Is it giving any error messages beyond a "Windows does not support this file type" message or something?

7Zip on Windows or Linux should handle the former (other compression software might be able to deal with the format too). Dunno about Mac options, but I'd imagine there are.

The T3 file requires the TADS runtime, from http://www.tads.org/tads3.htm

Certainly in the case with Kendra, the transparency is intentional. Unavoidable, and some people have noticed it (it's been commented on before), but intentional.

7Zip is a means of compressing files, like Zip files. You can find software to handle them (for Windows) here: http://www.7-zip.org/

Find it here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67740160/BlackwellConsequence_Day0.7z

So, yeah. This is a fangame, or at least the very beginnings of one. And, well, I'm hoping it's (going to be, when it's finished) fun to play. Right now, there's very little to it - it's just the start. But considering how slow my work speed is (and the fact I never complete 99.9% of anything I work on!) I thought I'd share what there is of it, now. So be gentle! Please?

I do plan on fleshing this out before I start on the next major part of the game, don't worry.

But do tell me what you think of it. What you think of (what little there is so far) the writing, the descriptions. Is it easy to understand what's going on? Is it comprehensible? It's all pretty rough anyway, but knowing where I'm going right (or wrong) can give me pointers about what to do. I'm planning on doing another release next week taking on-board things people have to say about this, and then cracking on with the next part of the game. I'm planning on making releases every time a major part of this gets done; it gives me something to aim for at least. I've even included (what passes for) the design notes for this part of the game, if you're curious.

On a more technical note, you're going to need the TADS 3 interpreter for this game. You can find one for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows on http://www.tads.org/tads3.htm - some Linux distros, by the way, do come with a TADS interpeter (QTads).

Hope you enjoy, and/or give critique. Thanks!

The entire sequence from Madeline's chilling betrayal onwards was... breathtaking.
It can't be betrayal if someone was never on your side to begin with.
Why not? It's a betrayal if they were at least pretending to be on your side until they damagingly display that they are not. She was a trusted acquaintance and then revealed her true intentions and broke that trust. Betrayal is about deception and breaking trust, and this ticks both those boxes.

Besides, it depends how far back you go. She was a good little spirit guide just doing her duty once, right?
Was she not a spiritual vampire ala Gavin and Shinjiro? Either that or something a lot more malevolent... did you see any other spirit possess her abilities, or even have it hinted?

I *think* Dave might be talking about the porting of the first three Blackwell games to iOS and Android. Or... something mysterious... ;D I personally would hope for a game by Dave, Ben Chandler and Francisco Gonzales! :)
I think their Twitter feeds and/or Blue Cup Tools podcasts gave a mysterious tip of the hat to that...

The Blackwell series / Re: Story Questions (Spoilers)

My big question:
5) Why does the universe enter Rosa's mind and why does it have the effect it does? At first Madeline describes the effects on Patricia and Lauren as "breaking" their minds, not letting the universe in. This does seem to be explained by a part of their souls fleeing to the void allowing the universe to flood in, which seems to be corroborated by Quentin's statement that they are receiving sensory input from outside that is overwhelming their brains, but why would it continue for Rosa after she refills her mind by escaping the void? When the same thing happened with the Countess, it was for a completely different reason and she survived and was able to function but went insane. Why does the same thing not happen to Rosa? Is she just so strong that she dies rather than become the Countess or even enter the catatonic state she was in before? Or was Madeline lying and the Countess actually went insane not because she banished Madeline but because Madeline tried to control her? Would that mean that if Rosa had banished Joey in Deception under Gavin's influence she would not have gone insane? Overall there seems to be a lot of uncertainty over what exactly is causing each of the "illnesses" of the Countess and the Blackwells that causes them to react differently to "the universe flooding in." Any ideas?
Madeline was probably lying; I too came to the conclusion that, had she not been trapped, she would have sooner or later have tried to possess Jocelyn. She was likely behind the death of Michael's sister too (not accidentally, as she claimed).

As concerning Gavin, it would've been a moot point even if Madeline was telling the truth.

As for the rest, dunno. I imagine that what happened to Rosa is unsurvivable; she was a dead woman walking from the moment she left the Void.

I am not too sad about Gavins species still being on earth, as Hatori showed there might be different approaches for them and some of them might find a way to survive without killing sooner or later....
The Gavins and the Madelines definitely outweigh the Hatoris - and even then, I wouldn't necessarily call Shinjiro "good" by any means.

Didn't notice this thread and it makes more sense to post about post-release bugs here anyway, so:

With Joey inside the police station and Rosa (outside) saying something to Durkin, switch back to Rosa while she's still speaking. Whatever she is saying will carry on.

Also, in the Pierro household: the fridge is described as humming. How, when there is no power?

After you've acquired the Parental Eye software but not before installing it, on the main location screen for Emil's office - use the software on the computer from here and Rosa will say "It's already installed." - and the software will show up on the computer as if it's always been there.
