The Blackwell series / Re: Next Blackwell game: Blackwell Epiphany
« on: August 02, 2013, 10:42:47 AM »
Ah yeah, it's looking great! I do really like Ben Chandler's sprite work and the portraits and text blend much better now. Not only that but it looks likely I'll be able to play more or less full screen, hooray!

Journey Down was made with a brand new engine, I believe. Something fancy and 3Dish! Way beyond my abilities, sadly. Unity is something I keep wanting to try out, although all the tutorials and books about the engine all seem to assume a base level knowledge of 3D and 3D programming that I just do not have.

Ah you're right, it's called Gobby. Although they didn't end up using it, it turns out they really did modify AGS to support 1280x720 before deciding to make their own engine to make the game more easily portable.

Although it looks it, the game isn't actually 3D. It's sprite based, but using pre-rendered sprites so nothing you couldn't already do if you hooked up with a 3D artist/animator instead of a pixel artist. Not that I think it would be a good choice for the Blackwell series, but perhaps for a future unrelated Wadjet Eye original? Hmm, given the scalability of pre-rendered graphics it would probably be an economical way of going hi-res.

Hey Dave, I was wondering are you sticking with the mixed-resolution thing for Epiphany?

Gemini Rue, Resonance and Primordia run at 320x240(or 320x200) and therefore I can use the x3 scaler to fit them nicely to my screen, but the Blackwell games all run at 640x480 for some reason even though the actual game art is clearly 320x240. This stops me from fitting the games to my screen quite as well because even the x2 scaler is too big (1280x960 is too tall for my monitor) and 640x480 is a bit on the small side.

Also, the mixture of resolutions was pretty jarring in the first three Blackwells (even when it was mostly just the fonts) but having just started Deception I'm finding the high resolution portraits even more jarring. Is this the direction that Epiphany is heading too or is it going to be more like Resonance and Primordia (since they're more recent)?

Sorry if I'm being rude, you obviously have reasons for the resolutions you pick, I'm just curious about the direction Epiphany is headed (the images in the OP of this thread aren't loading for some reason).

though I may consider writing something in Unity to take advantage of higher resolution art

AGS supports (IIRC) 320x200, 320x240, 640x400, 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768. Of course, some of this might have changed by now.

I also remember reading somewhere that the commercial version of 'The Journey Down' is still running on a modified version of AGS that supports 1280x720 art and takes care of scaling if the user's computer has a different resolution.

Oof, just finished Convergence and started Deception and I'm finding the resolution mixing quite jarring. I found the 640x480 text mixed with 320x240 graphics in the previous games ugly*, but tolerable.

It's even worse in this one though! I hope for the next game Dave goes with one resolution or the other. I'd be fine with the whole game being 640x480, but if some of the graphics are going to be low res, I'd rather the rest were too.

*In case it's not clear, it's not low resolutions I find ugly, it's the mixing of resolutions.

Ah damn, I figured that solution out and was just hoping there'd be a more elegant/efficient one. Thanks for the reply and yeah, I'll email Dave.

Ba-bump. Is mine really the only DVD with this problem? I would have assumed this kind of problem would have occurred during the production of the master and would therefore affect all copies.

Primordia / Cannot install off the DVD
« on: February 15, 2013, 02:09:21 PM »
Setup is asking for PrimordiaSetupDVD-1a.bin, when the file on the disc is called Primordia-1a.bin. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to tell the installer that the file has a different name and the only solution I found was to copy the file onto my computer and rename it there.

Other Games / Re: Graphics mode error - easy fix!
« on: January 04, 2013, 07:55:14 AM »
I had this error and I have a fairly modern graphics card. Or to clarify, I got this error upon coming here and discovering that there was a settings program and after I had selected 4X AA, it set the resolution to 2560x1920 when my monitor has a max res of 1920x1200. Rather baffling!

I know this post is old and you're probably long gone, but this is pretty easy to explain. You didn't select 4x Anti Aliasing, you selected 4x scaling. There are no anti aliasing options for AGS games, only scaling options. There are some scaling options using the HQ filter which people sometimes mistakenly refer to as AA, but they're not.

Resonance / Re: Bennet's Credit Card Missing

I think perhaps you took them from him as Ed when Bennet was tied up. Perhaps Ed isn't carrying them any more though, where might he have left them?

Resonance / Re: What's the latest version?

That's really strange! Email me and I'll send you through to BMT who can reactivate your download. So sorry about this.

It only fixes a tiny crashing bug at the beginning, so if you have already finished the game it's probably not worth all this hassle.  But if you want it for completeness's sake, than let me know.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. I haven't finished the game yet, but I think I'm past the area with the bug. Don't apologise though, I saw the notice so I knew it was going to expire. I mostly want the update for completeness's sake, so I have the most recent version in my backup (a bit OCD I know).

Resonance / Re: What's the latest version?

Same as Jazzy, it says my password has expired.

What's more, it says "The above password information expires on Friday, July 20, 2012. Please make sure that you download the product(s) before this date." in the email with the links, so it's obviously deliberate (on BMT Micro's part).

EDIT: The Primordia email doesn't mention expiring so I think it'll be fine. The Resonance one said it would and it did.

as I kept the installer plus have the CD, but thought I'd post for confirmation that my links expired as well.

I too backed up the download and still have the CD, but since they're outdated now I'd like to update my back up.

Resonance / Re: What's the latest version?

There is a small update from the version that was on the DVDs, but it only fixes one small crashing bug that is easy to avoid (don't switch player character when Anna and Ed talk in the hospital!), so you should be safe to play the DVD version.

Ah, thanks! Do you know how I can download the most recent version anyway? My BMT Micro links seem to have expired.

Primordia / Re: Resolution?
« on: December 06, 2012, 05:39:04 PM »
Now I would hope that playing on a GTX 460 would allow me to pick the highest setting but once I start the game I get an error saying the software cannot start with the selected settings so I am forced to play in windowed mode at the lowest resolution. It was just a thing I was wondering about as the demo allowed me to play in full screen but the full game isn't. Maybe just bad luck on my part.

Maybe a stupid question, but what is your monitor's native resolution? Also, does the driver control software for your card allow custom resolutions?

Primordia / Re: Resolution?
« on: December 06, 2012, 01:03:55 PM »
For some reason about half of the resolutions that are available in the options menu are unsupported with my Nvidia GTX 460M. I have to play it with the lowest option which is kind of annoying as there are higher resolutions usable with the game. Will there be a fix for this?

You'd have to ask Nvidia, Wadjet Eye didn't have anything to do with your graphics card drivers. :P

Seriously though, I'm not sure what you want fixed. You said your card doesn't support the higher resolutions, what kind of fix do you expect from the game?
