Title: Kelly crash bug - fixed!
Post by: nerka99 on December 12, 2011, 01:12:08 PM
Hello, just picked indie royale and started playing Legacy. When my conversation with punk roommate chick of the girl who commited suicide ended my game crashed with this error (http://wstaw.org/m/2011/12/12/beztytulu.JPG).
I'll try to download stand alone version and check if it will give me same error but it would be nice to play it on steam.

Oh and hello everyone on forum :)

Hi Nerka.  Can you verify if that happens every time? We did update the game for Steam, so downloading the standalone won't help.

Hi, tried it 5 times, always the same result. I tried turning speech off, then tried turning subtitles off, nothing helped. If you wish i can upload my save folder and you can check it by yourself (let me know your preffered upload service beforehand though).

Hi Nerka.  This is a stab in the dark.  Do you have an usual monitor size by any chance?  Try running it in windows mode and see if it works.

To change into windows mode, right click on the game in your Steam client, select "properties" -> Set launch options. Type "--setup" and click OK.  When you run the game, the setup window will pop up.  Try it again and let me know if it works.

Tried it in window mode (actually tried it before you sugested) and i've got same result :/
I downloaded stand alone version but as you said it pretty much crashed.
I think ill load last autosave and maybe try to do things in diffrent order. Talk to Kelly and then (if it wont crash) to Adrian maybe it will help (altough somehow i doubt it).
If it'll work i'll let you know. [EDIT] Well sadly it didnt :(

Heh weird stuff i've got so "pumped up" when i was playing, and i was so happy that i found game that suited my taste and now "bam, u can't play it!" :P

Aha! I think I narrowed down the problem.  Do you have the Tutorial on?  Try turning it off before doing that scene.

Is there a way to do it other than starting the game from the begining?

[EDIT] Actually nvm i started new game and fast clicked to that point... and... YES! that was the problem. Thank you for help!
Now i can get back and enhoy game in peace :D

PS I wont miss any "tips" right? Pretty much they all can be found in "HELP" section in options?

Yes. The only thing you'll miss is the game telling you how to combine clues, which you can learn about in the HELP section.  Sorry about this!  We're creating a fix right now. :)

No problem. Frankly i didnt expected such fast help ;)
It's good that it was encountered and fixed fast, fact that less people get stresssed about this and can enjoy the game fully is a good news in my book :)
Now if you'll excuse me i have a game to "devour" :D
Title: Re: Error in steam version of Legacy
Post by: DaveGilbert on December 12, 2011, 02:17:18 PM
Well it's not fixed yet!  We have to play through the game to make sure we didn't break anything first. :)  That will take some time and then we have to wait for Steam to implement the fix, so for anyone else who encountered this bug it is probably faster to just replay the game with tutorial mode off.  So sorry about this.

I bought this game ages ago but could never play it, I bought the bundle again today and it seems really promising. Unfortunately I ran into the same problem as nerka but with the difference being that I was playing the game with tutorial mode off from the start :-\

Hi C.B.

Was it the same error message?  Could you post a screenshot?

Here's the error message, but yeah, it seems identical:

WOO!  I figured out the bug. :)

It's *actually* caused by opening up the notebook before you go to the dorm.  If you never opened up the notebook before the dorm, then this bug never happens.

For those interested in the technical side of things, looking at the notebook before the dorm increases the "tutorial count" by an extra number then it should have, so when it looks for the next tutorial message it crashes (whether tutorial mode is active or not).

So sorry that I released the game with this horrible bug, but I'm happy that I narrowed down on the issue.

Funny how you could test a game ad nasuem but never find the most obvious thing.

Anyway, as I said we are fixing it and retesting the game now.  Then we'll get an update to Steam sharpish and cross our fingers that they implement it right away.

Well done tracking it down, Dave. I'll start over without looking at the notebook, that is unless senility ensues.

Update!  We fixed the bug and restested the game.  It was a very simple fix (just changing one integer), but better safe than sorry.  It doesn't seem to have broken anything (at least, nothing critical that we can detect) so we are uploading it to Steam's servers now.  Usually they are prompt about implementing the fixes, but it's a busy time of year for them.  I'll update this thread once they've done it.  In the meantime, avoid the notebook until after the dorm.

Damn! I ran into another crash, Dave. I loaded from a save before I'd gotten the notebook and headed straight to the dorms, but this time the game crashed either before the notebook popped up during the conversation with the punk or after, like the last time. I can't remember for sure and I can't reproduce the crash, but here's the error message I got when it occured:

Title: Re: Error in steam version of Legacy
Post by: DaveGilbert on December 12, 2011, 03:58:58 PM
Aha.  I know this one.  This is related to the previous notebook crash, which is fixed now.  Make sure the cursor is not on the "notebook area" before the notebook pops up (i.e. keep the cursor at the bottom of the screen during that conversation).  You only have to do this the first time the notebook comes up.  After that, you are definitely past the "danger zone" and you will have zero problems.

It's so weird that these bugs must have been in the game for almost five years and nobody has encountered them until now. :o

Just my rotten luck :P
I just finished Legacy, tommorow i'll try second part... maybe i'll find you more game breaking bugs that noone encountered for years :P

Yay!  Glad you got through the rest of the game without incident.  Hopefully this is the only "critical" bug anyone encounters.  If anyone finds any more, definitely let us know.

Phew, good thing i found this thread. Had the same problem, and tried everything i could think of.

I'll just wait for the patch from steam then.

The game is fixed on Desura.  The Steam version will be fixed whenever they hit the "accept upgrade" button.

I managed to finish it without further crashes, thanks! I ran into some strange bugs at the hospital but let's just blame it on ghosts ;)

Lovely game, shorter than I'd thought, but the lenght was perfect for me in the end.

Wow, looking around to see if anyone else had this problem and it turns out the Dev has already diagnosed the problem and uploaded a patch to Steam within hours of it's release from the Royale Bundle. Why can't all Game studios be this efficient  :P :D
Title: Re: Error in steam version of Legacy

Haha.  Maybe because they don't launch with critical bugs in the first place? :D

Sorry for the double post, but Steam confirms the bugfix is LIVE!  It's like the bug never happened!

...

Maybe nobody noticed?

Thanks for that! Steam is already re-downloading Legacy. That was really fast!

Will the DRM-free direct download at Indy Royal be updated as well? And what about Desura?

Indie Royale gets the games from Desura, so... yes!  It should already be done.

Cheers for the quick fix  :D

Just noticed this! Wished I'd looked in here before creating my thread (which I've noe deleted, no need for duplicates!). But the thread title is a bit generic. Anyway, glad to see this fixed as it is a tiny bit of a game breaker.

Hooray, this means I can get back to playing it!

Also, thanks for Gemini Rue as well, guys. I loved the heck out of that game and I'm looking forward to enjoying the trilogy.

Hah.  So that was you.  I wrote out a reply and hit "post" and then got an error.  Eventually I realized that the thread had been deleted.

So now you know the epic saga of Kelly and the notebook.  Listen to the commentary to hear the truly spine-chilling story of Moti's dog leash.

Had to stop playing at the same scene yesterday and eventually bumped into this thread. It's great you already fixed it, can't wait to play again!

(Loved GR as well!)

Now i could say "I was here!"
Had the same bug, search for developers, get here, and realize that's it's already fixed.
But i'm proud to have been a witness of this! I even hope for another bug in the sequels and come back here! (well, not really, but it's a very user friendly thread)

Part 2 completed no bugs
Started Convergence and i have lil nitpick
(http://wstaw.org/m/2011/12/13/1.JPG)
U can't see it when its so small but on full screen u see clearly that letter "o" is partially on Rosa's thumb :)
And yes i know it's such a small thing that its prolly not worth mentioning and its surelly not breaking the game :P
[edit] PS avatar of Allan have blue tie and his sprite have red tie :P

Doh!  I think I can record that in the "trivial" column. :)  I'll fix it for the Jan 13th Steam release.

Doh!  I think I can record that in the "trivial" column. :)  I'll fix it for the Jan 13th Steam release.

One more thing, there is missing sound file in Lanthern location when Mallone ask Rose if shes hearing saxophone, there is only text there.

Also there were few places when voice cuted in 3/4 of sentence and few places when voice was a bit diffrent from what was shown in text (this one i've also seen in 2nd part of the game)

Oh and i've just finished part 3... must say those games gave me amazing experience

Just started playing the game today, and so far it's really great! One of the better adventure games I played the last months.

I just noticed a small bug in Legacy:

When Rosa had a look at the pictures on JoAnn's pin board and asks Adrian about Davenport the wrong voice-over is played. The subtitles say something like "Do you know someone named Davenport" (it's kind of hard to read as it vanishes so fast), but the voice-over that sounds is "Thanks anyway", which is played again after Adrian answers the question.

Just a small thing, but maybe worth fixing for the January release.

Edit: And another of these tiny errors...
When Rosa is going to the hospital at night and you click the keys the text sometimes says "Yeah right, while the guard is watching" or something like this, but the voice-over says "I don't need any of the other keys".

there is also 1 inconsistency which was weird to me (but i know it want be changed prolly)
Mallone said at least twice about him not beeing able to smoke as a ghost, and missing it etc... but on Blackwells Christmass picture (i think it was this one) hes holding cigarette
... i know, nitpick :P
Title: Re: Kelly crash bug - fixed!

Maybe he got a pack of cigarettes from another ghost and that was his last one?  It would explain why he looks so annoyed in that picture.

Small glitch with new commentary.  The dog run keeps repeating  the lines about ghosts looking bad in light and about allie & the trailer every time you enter the dog run in the daytime.  And mentions allie & the trailer again at night.

Only other issue I notice was that I got a crash when I clicked on the notebook and tried to do stuff with it as soon as it showed up in the UI, but  it never happened again.

The game is fixed on Desura.  The Steam version will be fixed whenever they hit the "accept upgrade" button.
I have the Desura version of the game and the Kelly Script bug is still present.  The installed version of the game I have is "Full (1026), Build 2".  I've re-downloaded the game twice.

Also, are there any plans to update the stand-alone version?

***EDIT***
After sleeping on it, I wonder, is the continued presence of this bug in the Desura version caused by the way it's packaged?  The Steam version allows the individual games of the trilogy to be downloaded while the Desura version downloads all the games as a package called "The Blackwell Trilogy: Remastered".  You then use a launcher to choose the specific game you want to play.

Would this mean that in order to update one specific game you would have to issue a patch for the bundle of games?

I... am not sure!  I definitely sent the fixed version to Desura.  I sent an email to Mike Rose to ask him about it, but it's 2am in the UK right now so we probably won't know until tomorrow.  I'll let you know.

The direct download at indyroyale.com already links to the new file with the filename being Legacy1.zip instead of Legacy.zip. So users who don't like Steam can at least get the fixed file without problems (I prefer direct downloads as I like to have a backup on CD...)

I downloaded release_games_15671_Legacy.1.zip from indieroyale.com and copied the savegame files from my steam version into the new folder. It worked and I could start my old game. The error message is gone and the game doesn't crash anymore but I can't get Joey to distract Kelly. Whenever I make a call, Rosangela just says thanks and finishes talking. Maybe this isn't an error and I'm just too stupid to figure out what to do next, but I simply can't get that notebook.

Lots of people get stuck here.  Go back to Rosa's apartment and talk to Joey about his "special powers."  Once you learn what those powers are, go back to the dorm.
